What It Used To Be
Things around here aren't what it used to be
We cant roam wild and free
We can't stay outside until the street lights come on
Because in a blink of an eye, we would be gone
We grew up on ALICE
Because people had malice
We learned to play dead
If you ever saw bloodshed
To always go in pairs
Unless you want to be tied to chairs
To carry pepper spray
Because some people only want it their way
To wear longer skirts
Or even better, wear loose sweatshirts
And hide your bra strap
In case a boy has a “mishap”
A simple night on the town
Ends with something put in your Crown
Repeated mumbles of “no”
Only urges them to go
go go

I wrote this poem soon after the school shooting at Parkland.
