Leaving The Past Behind
What a wonderful week
Full of beautiful music and wonderful people
The strongest energy I´ve felt in so long
The nicest people I've met
The gentlest hand I've felt in mine
Your aura kept me feeling safe
Your warmth and embrace helped me through the noise
The late nights talks and early morning coffee
Make me not want to change a thing.
But now I see your picture
And my stomach drops to the floor
Knowing I put my trust in someone
Who never had anything for me
I see you now looking at me
As if you’re looking at a stranger
I hardly knew you
And I’m glad you never got to know me

“Leaving the Past Behind” was written in the memory of someone who aided me and encouraged me to get out of an abusive relationship. I believed I would be with him for a long time, but he ended up leaving me about as quickly as we met over something quite miniscule. Writing this poem put me through a lot of mixed emotions. The memories that we created up until the day he left were almost fairy-tale like, but sometimes things are much better left in the past; in memory.
