Too Busy

We're too busy letting go

To hold on to what was made

For the soul.

Like a cruddy birthday gift

That no one would want

To kiss,

And hold close to them

We try to be like free birds,

But act like one in a cage.

You say, "You only live once"

But exactly what life are you living?

You speak of wanting freedom

But you're the only one with the key

Tears could fall from my face

In absolute pity

You expect me to become

A blacksmith

And meld that key for you,

But what you need to realize,

Is keys only work when they're made

By yourself whom shouldn't be ignorant

To the spot they're taking up on

This belt of new spawns.

And I don't know the way to

Your heart,

Like a rocky road by the cliffside

Your heart is screaming at

The restraints

But you're not listening.

Why have a heart when it's getting

Broken by your own hand?

Throw away your lies and

Piteous scene,

And live like the person

You were destined to be.

The author's comments:

I just started writing poems this year, they're not at their highest peak but I write from my heart. I receive a lot of support from my English teacher at school, she's the one who gave me the confidence to try this website out. In class we were discussing the quote, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." said by John Lennon, and I wrote this poem in response to that. This quote comes from his song, Beautiful Boy, and the song evoked many emotions in me and further inspired me to write a poem such as this. Literature has always been my passion and I would love to continue to pursue it on this website.
