just try it, and if you hate it you never have to do it again

I’m sitting alone in a blue expanse of water that smells like cheap flowers.

I wonder when it was I became a poet.

Was it when I was little

And sang songs about roses being red and violets being blue?

Or was it in fifth grade,

When I quoted Einstein to my father

And he laughed

At the pure audacity of my metaphors?

Or was it the first time I told you that even the stars

Could not amount to the worth

you hold in this universe?

I wonder.

Was it the first time I held your shaking body

In my arms and I told you

I don’t know what this means

Or how to say it,

But please, please keep

Breathing

Maybe it was the countless times I awoke to your

Hey, I’m sorry but I think this is really it.

I’ll never forget the franticness of my

Pulse

As I begged God

For yours.

Maybe it was yesterday

When I told you goodnight.

I wonder

If it was today

When I remind you once again that I will

Always

Keep reminding you

That I am here

And you are

Here

And we are here together,

And that my love

is no coincidence.
