To My Future Daughter
When I meet her, I’ll tell her
That the world belongs to her
That when she closes her eyes and dreams
To know that she is the one
Who will achieve the impossible
I’ll declare that the sky is not the limit for her
That there are no ceilings, glass or concrete,
That she can't shatter
I'll remind her that her greatest weapons
Are her words and thoughts
And she can fight with her fists
But she'll win with her mind
I'll explain that she will see the world
Through sharpened eyes,
And sometimes she won't understand
Why other people see what they do
But she will have the power to show them
Colours and shapes they didn't know existed
I'll hold her and tell her that I've been missing a piece of my heart
And she stuck her hand into my chest and she mended me
Before she could even move or speak
I’ll say that I’ve known her
since the sky was hollow
and the universe stood still
And that there is no greater honour
Than living a lifetime that intersects with hers
I will say that perfection
Isn't a goal a human can achieve
But my rules are different
And you will always be perfect to me

This piece started as a free write that I wrote after watching a performance of the poem 'If I Should Have a Daughter' by Sarah Kay, and through edits and feedback has become the written work of mine that comes closest to truly expressing the love I feel for my future child.
