Church Girls
Being a church girl
I am expected to be at church every Sunday
I am expected to have everything right in my life
I am expected to be happy all the time
I am expected to have a smile on my face all the time
I am expected to never make any mistakes
I am expected to be perfect.
Being a church girl
I can never have any learning moments
Because I’m supposed to have everything right, right?
But no one knows what us church girls go through
With having the thought of always being perfect
Even though no one is perfect
People still expect us to be something that we are not.
Every day we struggle with the thought of
What do they think of us
Or oh I can’t do that because
I'm a church girl.
We struggle with the thought of
What will the church say or
What will our parents say or
What will our friends say?
People don’t know what goes on in our lives
People do not know that we have something wrong,
But being fully honest
Everyone has something going on.
It does not matter who you are
Or what people know about you
Everyone has something going on in their lives
Even the people you least expect
The people who have
“It all together”
Have something going on that they do not, want anyone knowing.
Even us church girls.
Even us church girls,
Do not know what to do when
Our families split
When our friends are fighting
When we are depressed
When we have self-doubt
When we have body issues
When we have anxiety
When we are getting bullied
When we have anything going on in our lives
We still do not know what to do
Or what to think.
Even us church girls.
Even us church girls
Can not wait until we climb over that mountain
Even us church girls
Can not wait until we kick down that wall
Even us church girls
Can not wait until we finish sailing through that ocean
Even us church girls
Want everything to be okay
But not everything is okay
And that is okay
It's okay to not be okay
Even us church girls need to be reminded
Of what God says about us
And not of what other people say.
Because if even the church girls
Are not believing in what God says
Who will?

I wrote this piece for my Humanities class, it was for a SLAM poetry contest. I decided to write about this topic because it was something going on in my life that I felt like needed to be said.
