I am a part of the part that at first was all, part of the darkness that gave birth to light, that supercilious light which now disputes with Mother Night her ancient rank and space, and yet can not succeed; no matter how it struggles, it sticks to
matter and can't get free. Light flows from substance, makes it beautiful; solids can check its path, so I hope it won't be long till light and the world's stuff are destroyed together. (Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut)

Night’s shade fell and the moonflower rose

From afar I see a spark of light

A spiral of a plumeria blossom

I see her dark eyes and soft petals

No rose or dahlia could match her beauty

I wanted to pick her and keep her

But when the daylight came she was gone

I wish I could see her again

So I sleep with hope of seeing her vibrant colors

But also with the fear of the light that took her away

I don’t want to leave her again

I must see her

Hell’s bells ring in my ears

And now my unfading love for her

Is the poison that will kill me

This poem is from a collection of poems I wrote based around the language of flowers from the Victorian era. Many lines are based off of the history of the plant, its symbolic meaning, and its uses.
