Disabled Joy

Smile, laugh, instead of taking the numbness

Picking out flowers that remind you of your youth

Where the sun shines, sun shines

When beaches crowded with your cousins and you could swim freely

You can still swim

You can still walk, timing your mile

Run, running, a running brain you still have

Read the book I give you with the change I had left

You can still read

Your pills, your numbness, like candy to your body even though you shouldn’t eat candy

Smile

Laugh

You can still do it, at 55 and blooming

The author's comments:

This poem is about my father, that has been setback because of his disibilities. He is still an intelligent man and has other qualitites that you simply must remind him about. I care a lot about him and my family.
