A Hidden Poem

Goosebumps crawl over my skin

They come from the memory of horror:

Laughter of power piercing my ears

Deep darkness hidden within,

Lies told to the child hoping for love.

Why must his shadow follow me?

to terrify or mock?

Why must his voice be remembered?

to keep my wound bleeding?

Why must I trust those surrounding me?

won’t they just push me around?

The lips of those I rightfully belong with are waiting,

But my judgement and memory

will always remain.

Who deserves a “poem of witness”?

My mother who was forced?
Myself who succumbed?

The terrain is more than shallow with evil.

come to help us

show us what we truly deserve

This poem was inspired by the #metoo movements and women being given the voice to speak up. Writing this poem has helped me accept and move on, and I hope it does the same for someone else out there. Speak up!
