Heartbreak

is listening to a song

they gave you

that reminded you of them

remembering each lyric that you felt

described them perfectly

and letting the sweet tears

that once traced the curve of your smile

be replaced

with the bitter tears

that burn your skin

as they fall onto your crossed legs

while you lean against the door

sitting on the bathroom floor

You can taste

each ounce of beauty

that used to exist in the melody

melt away

with each salty droplet

that streams onto your quivering lip

Heartbreak

is sitting on the porch swing

at midnight

staring up at dark sky that conceals

all but a few stars that shine through,

and stopping yourself

in the middle of the wish

you always used to make

You cross your arms

to protect yourself from the breezy night,

but you can feel the faint light

pouring onto your skin,

replacing the hands that once rested

on your freckled shoulders

and traced down

every inch of your back

You can see

the moon

through your tear-filled eyes

that sting with the thought of them

looking at the same sky

in this exact moment

while you’re thinking of them

and you’re far from their mind

Heartbreak

Is regretting every moment

you shared with them

while at the same time

wanting to relive every second of it

just to get the same feeling back,

that same rush

of passion

that once seemed like

it was the only thing

that was keeping your heart beating

You can’t help but read old texts

that push needles

through your chest

all over again

You can feel

every nerve in your body

as your skin crawls

but still every bit of warmth

with each memory

that replays in your head
