The color of her lips,

Shiny and immaculate,

Turned into a smile at you from across the bar.

The color of your phone case

As she typed in her number,

A promise to meet again.

The color of the booth on your first date,

Faded and worn,

Yet still fitting and comfortable.

The color of her couch when you see her place

For the first time,

A peek and a glimpse

Into her life.

The color of her dress as you spin her across the dance floor

A twirl,

A dip,

A sweep.

The color of ribbon on her anniversary gift,

Shiny and vibrant,

Brand new and fresh.

The color of the feeling in the air

Whenever she was around

Vivid, bright, alive

Romantic…

Love.

The color of the napkins at the restaurant

When you proposed to her

Her answer positive,

Absolute.

The color of her bouquet as she walked down the aisle,

The most beautiful thing you’d ever seen.

Brilliant in white,

Holding one vivid color.

The color of the walls of the hotel room

On your honeymoon,

Dark, deep, and rich.

The color of happiness and enrichment

Of luck and rebirth…

But it was also the color of her phone case,

When you saw the texts to another person.

The color of the car you saw parked in your driveway,

Shiny and vibrant,

Brand new and fresh.

The color you saw when you had to face the facts,

Face the truth

Of bitterness,

Betrayal.

The color of the vase she threw when you confronted her,

It shattering across the floor,

Cracked and irreparable

Like your trust in her.

The color you felt when she walked out...

A cold and cruel feeling,

All encompassing.

Her red dress a whirlwind of hate

And her back the final chapter.

The color of malice as you delete photos,

Break gifts,

Burn memories,

Of her smile in that one color of lipstick.

The color of pain,

Of heartbreak

Because while she left,

Leaving you behind without anything

Filled with spitefulness and venom and loneliness

You and her still had...

A relationship in red.

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem because I though it would be fun to start a series of poems that focus on one central color with varying themes of what the color could represent. However, I have been a bit too lazy to actually continue the idea for now, although it may happen in the future.
