trust your heart

you’re leaving

but i am still wrapped around your finger

caught up in washed away nostalgia and splintered desires

i’m foolish for believing in the inconceivable wishes

that rush through my hands like rain drops

because i know my face is elbowed to the back of your mind

a box of old memories collecting dust

like the cars of the deceased in a hospital parking lot

my heart is wired wrong

it won’t stop aching

for songs that are too high for me to sing

dreams that are out of my reach

breaths that i can no longer take

crack my chest down the middle

and rip my heart from the fizzled out strings

hold it in your bloody hands

and listen to the way it sings for you

the way it bends over backwards to meet your touch

like a willow tree in the wind

a bridge sinking further in

feel the way it beats for you

jumping in your palms like a worn out record rattling in place

i will stand with a hole in my chest

bleeding out tears and unable to breathe

waiting for you to turn and walk away forever

dying for the chance to see you smile one last time

to hear you laugh one last time

dying for the chance to be in your arms

face pushed into the small of your neck

dying for the chance to give you my heart all over again
