Millennium Kids
Millennium Kids
‘Cause we are the helpless, selfish, one of a kind
Millennium kids that all wanna die
Walking in the streets
With no light inside our eyes
- Conan Gray -
We are the anonymous generation
Forming new opinions and thoughts
From our elders and parents
That don’t understand us
Or how our lives largely differ from theirs
We may be a bit self absorbed
And care too much about likes and filters
We may be selfish and needy
Our interests are fleeting
But we are loyal, loving and changing
There is a fire that’s brewing inside
That mental thing we’re all trying to resolve
But it’s new to us all
It’s our curtain call
Calling us forth to be stronger than the last
We all have our problems, I know
We’re all trying to stay afloat
Supporting each other until we can’t take the load
Our brains may be rotting
And screaming and kicking
Finding a way to break through
‘Cause we are the helpless, selfish, one of a kind
Millennium kids that all wanna die
Walking in the streets
With no light inside our eyes
Mental health and daily struggles
Of these teenage kids that would rather die
Depression and anxiety
Bullies and fighting parents
How do we seem alright?
Yes, we may be struggling in our own minds
We feel we’re dead inside
But we’re also strong and stubborn, one of a kind
Teenage kids that are faulting inside
We stay connected and strong
We fight to find an unseen lifeline

My name is Kaylie and I am a ninth grader in High School in West Linn, OR. During this last October, my creative writing class spent most of the month writing poems of all different types. I wrote one poem in particular that I would like to share with you today.
I am writing and submitting this piece in the hopes to be printed in your publication. This poem is a free verse that includes lyrics from Conan Gray’s song Generation Why. It is titled Millennium Kids. The poem is about 250 words or 41 lines. My piece is about the struggles teenagers these days go through, focusing on the mental part of that struggle. I feel like mental health is a struggle for us all and it needs to be talked about more, and that’s what I hope to do through my writing. I think many people can connect with it and makes them feel heard and not alone. Maybe even motivated to do something about it.
