Where I'm From
I am from chlorine
from stamps and Scratch n’ Sniff
I am from where the fairies were
(Golden sky,
it felt like love.)
I am from the sunset hibiscus
The orchid, parallels
it reminded us of my great-grandmother
I’m from the gingerbread and widened eyes
from Andrea and Diane
and Mary
I’m from the peeping tongue,
and the gaping mouths,
from Smile! and Sing!
I’m from the coat of dreams and the giant
The falling palace
And the ship
I’m from everywhere and nowhere
Baklava, gumbo
From those who’ve left,
And those whom they’ve left wandering.
The attic
I, dreaming below them.
We hide, try to lose the feeling of
What we know we cannot feel again.
I am from the women and men
Who’ve lived, breathed, loved, laughed, cried, and dared before me
I am a sprout from a seed
Sprout to forest.
