The first two lines refer to a lost relationship between friends. The next two lines explain what had separated the two, one developed and addiction and became its prisoner. The two following lines refer to him knowing he needed help, but being too stubborn to let go of his bad habits. The last line is in the view of his old friend, wishing they had more time to fix him, but knowing he was going to go too soon.
