Faster than the time when it flies.

“Get him out!” your classmate shouts.

“Just one more!” another classmate says.

More Balls ZOOM ACROSS

The Gym.

BANG!

Go the Guns.

You DIVE BEHIND a pile of sandbags,

Your only SOURCE of COVER.

You look around.

Only the Bloody

Ground of Dead

Allies,

surrounds you.

You’re Startled,

Trembling,

         BUT

 STILL    IN

             ONE

Time to Redeem yourself.

Your Squad is

With the single THROW

Of a Dodgeball.

You’re Exhausted.

Gasping for air

After the Bloody Mess

Made in front of you.

Wondering

How the heck you’re still alive

After ALL that has happened.

ALL the times you could’ve

DIED.

You brush yourself off

From all the Dirt.

To Rendezvous

With your side

Your classmates may love you for WINNING The Battle,

But now your side must WIN THE WAR.

The author's comments:

This was part of a Summative Poetry Assignment for my Grade 7 Writing Class, and then the idea for this poem was how Dodgeball was sort of similar to World War 2 in some ways.
