Hair
The program told her:
‘Grow out your hair.’
So she did.
Guarded it as if it was a
Priceless treasure,
Even though it was worth nothing.
But they didn’t know that.
Their comments plowed through her,
Shaking her to the core,
Making her feel like all that was worth anything
Was her hair.
She couldn’t take it anymore.
So she cut it.
It was choppy, wild and uneven,
But she was happy,
And her smile was worth more than crystals.
