Favorite Quote:
“But now, for the first time, I see you are a man like me. I thought of your hand-grenades, of your bayonet, of your rifle; now I see your wife and your face and our fellowship. Forgive me, comrade. We always see it too late. Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony--Forgive me, comrade; how could you be my enemy?”
― Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front

Past

The Past is but a memory held by nostalgia and regret,

constantly encumbering our self interests, our actions.

It is the night to our day and the day to our night,

for without it, there is no life.

It is our next movement, our next thought, it longs to be Present.

It is the burden we may carry for years to come,

until we are old and gray, we only wonder what we didn’t do to change it.

Present

The Present can be outweighed by polluted actions,

it can be outweighed by righteous acts, nonetheless.

Though it seems it is our best Future we long for,

it is balance we truly need.

The kind souls of this world clash upon its evil

to make the balance a human still has yet to learn.

The Present is what is happening and what still has yet to happen,

for it is greatly depicted on the Past and the Future.

The world reflects how we feel and what we want,

a sure sign that we haven’t an idea of what it will become.

Future

The Future hangs upon the clouds, it grows with every dream,

it rains our outcome unto the Present, thus, our Past is created.

It is bestowed upon our everyday lives as yet we still have to fulfill it.

It is the wonder that fuels the wisest of life,

the constant needing to peek behind the curtain,

not knowing that it lies over the garden wall.

We grasp for every branch that can take us higher and higher away from our Present,

and into the world of the unknown.

The author's comments:

This piece is written from my feelings and my overall perception of the world. Whether it was the past, present, or future, I tried to tell the reader what life was like behind the eyes of 13-year-old. I now know that the feelings of the world are not represented by only one feeling, but are met with another, or many others. From light comes dark somewhere down the road, though it can be met, once again, by light. Life is like a journey that we all walk upon until its end, our end, and can be met with any number of obstacles or achievements. Life is but a mystery to all, and yet we depict it.
