Breathing felt more of a burden than a necessity.
It burned within my lungs, scorching the inside of my body as I exhale.
Maybe, that is why nothing but ash came out when you asked me for my name.
What is love in comparison to lust?
What is a fire to do in the midst of the heavy rainfall?
Who am I to you, in the shadows of every body you’ve touched?
When I met you, I took a deep breath in and never exhaled because I was so afraid of letting you out.
With a single motion, everything I tried so hard to contain was stolen from me.
You were the plague and when I took you in and refused to let you out, I poisoned myself.
Now, every time I go to breathe I end up choking and what makes it worse is,
if I stop now, I'll die, but if I continue then you've taken my life.

This piece means a lot to me, personally. It highlights the effects of a toxic relationship and an abusive one. Love is in comparison to the plague, the way it drains the life from the speaker.
