First Words
A grey car seat on cream carpet
Far too long ago
In a house that no longer exists
Sounds of giggles fill the air
She furrows her brow
And smiles and laughs
She stares at my mouth
With those sparkling eyes
Trying to mimic
But only sounds come out
Unintelligible to everyone but her
We lean closer
Not wanting to miss a single “word”
Like shes giving a moving speech
She reaches out
Tiny fingers curl around mine
A tight grip for someone so small
Another “word” spoken
We smile even larger
Imagining the day she becomes
The most beautiful storyteller of all

This poem is about my little cousin when she was 8 months old. She is 14 now and it's almost scary how big shes gotten in such a short time. I love thinking about this memory i have with her because it takes place in my grandmother's house which burned down a few years ago. I have so many memories of my cousin and my grandmother's house and they make me so happy to remember the old days.
