Hark! A Moment's Fleeting Thought
Hark!
As I lie in the shadows of the night,
My mind unfolds a brilliant sight.
A novel, imagination's wild cascade
A plot, a story’s written facade.
Some characters, see them develop
Settings, watch them envelop
A thought wild and new
Never before heard, it’s true!
Original! Wonderful! Surreal!
My fingers fly across the keys with zeal!
A first sentence, then a paragraph, then a page…
I write of love, of fear, of rage…
Wait till it’s finished - the story is here!
My moment of greatness is certainly near!
But wait, what’s this? Tell me this urge is fake -
I haven’t the time for a bathroom break!
Can’t you see? I’m on a roll!
Sitting pouring out my soul -
Really, I’ve truly got to go?
But my thoughts… they will slow…
Hold this idea, don’t let it stop
I’ll return before it all goes POP!
For my thoughts are like balloons,
Fragile, delicate, rising to the moon
In other words, I haven’t got much time
Before this disappears, this concept of mine.
So make it lightning fast, if you will
This liquid glass of thought cannot spill!
I’m back, I’m back! At my computer I again dwell
However, my brain, it does not swell
Once again it has happened, as I let out a sigh
The idea of mine has gone from my eye.
A vision so great I thought I would burst
But this vanishing act? Not the first.
Someday I’ll find you, and cling to you dear
When that day comes (never, I fear)
The book I write will be truly the best!
Other writers, hah, they’ll try to put me to the test.
You may try, but you’ll never win!
...but until that perfect day comes....
I’ll stick to my tonic and gin.
Late night spurs of creativity,
Pages written with absolute brevity.
My mind shall continue to race as I lie in my bed, with another heavy sigh.
Watching all my stars go by.
