-Doctor Who

Things are addicting

When your're alive and living

I crave attention and appraisal from friends

But when I find these things near me

I f*** things up and they end

I'm addicted to laughter and TV and music,

To mac & cheese, nuggets, and fries

Addiction is a disease

Like a leash, it tethers you

Whoever says otherwise lies

I'm addicted to weed

I smoke every day

I'm addicted to my pills but don't take them

When the time comes to give up my vices

I come up with excuses to say

I'm addicted to picking

My scalp, cheeks, and lashes

It hurts but I like the tears in my eyes

Addiciton is a disease

That creeps up and controls you

Whoever says otherwise lies

I'm addicted to cutting

Just a slight tear in my skin

I do it to feel alive

But when I'm addicted

It gets kind of scary

Because I start to feel little inside

Addiciton is a disease

It's a change in the neurons and mind

Not something to get over

Whoever says otherwise lies

I'm addicted to death

thoughts of murder, torture, and crime

With each growing instance

I'm exposed to such images

I wonder when it will be my time

My addiction is growing

With obsessions of darkness and death

and with each urging thought

To come through my addicted mind

I wonder what I might do next

The author's comments:

Following Demi Lovato's overdose, I noticed a narrative of hopelessness and lack of endurance when discussing addiction and drug abuse. As someone who struggles with addiction, I know this to be wrong and I want to show that addiction really is a disease of the mind and not a question of character.
