An Ode to Paris

My dear Paris

Your lights glitter

like the stars in the sky

Your streets

filled with the smoke of Parisians

Drags so effortless,

delicate like the song bird

Home to a culture like no other

As I lie in the cool, soft bed of grass—your bed of grass

facing your La Tour Eiffel

I wonder

If the Heavens above

came down for one night to visit me

to visit all their other Godly creations

Your Champs-Élysées

Like an ocean

spreads out for miles

with beautiful people

Each trying to take in

The magnanimity of your world

Oh! what my small town would think of you,

sweet Paris!

Now the time has come, Paris

The doves fly above

Wedding bells ring—your wedding bells

The day is here

When girl becomes woman

And yet, Paris

You stand beside her

giving her away

away into a new chapter

You hold on tight

Tight, Tighter

just let her go

she’s all grown, no longer alone

just let her go

Paris

you taught her the world

you practically gave her the world

But as I watch you

as I learn more and more about you

I realize

this is not the end of her chapter

but the beginning of mine

What you did for her,

how you broke her,

fixed her,

changed her,

how you made her a better person—softer, tender, kinder

Somehow

Someday

I hope only that you do the same

for me

The author's comments:

After traveling to Paris, France for a wedding, I immediately fell in love with the city! The well-known "city of lights" was an inspiration to me and I wanted to capture the beauty of Paris through this poem. Hopefully, I can one day re-visit Paris and travel the world to find inspiration in other great cities!
