the room upstairs
the room upstairs used to be a heaven
its bleached walls protected us from the outside world
it was never dark, even when the lights were off
we filled the room with our light and laughter
it was safe
how quickly a heaven can turn to a hell
I couldn’t tell you how the room feels now,
I have not been in it since
but when I look inside, all the light has disappeared
maybe you took it with you
to give to someone else
it is now empty in that room
so dull
someday light will return,
but not the same light you took
the room upstairs might change back to heaven
like it so rapidly changed to hell
but no matter what
it will always be slightly darker than when you were there
