Distracted

Distractions have always led me off my course

Taking me to watch what everyone else is doing

Or plunging me into the depths of my imagination.

I’m never in the present

Doing what I should be doing;

Either doodling during a boring lecture

Or dreaming about what could have been and could be.

Instead, I’m staring at a dark screen

That reflects all of my imperfections and flaws,

The same dark screen that brings me

Into the world of plastic and numbness,

Blind to work, time, and sense.

This world sucks in all of my desire

To pursue my passions, to be who I could be.

I’m falling into the abyss

Flashing with so many never-seen-before colors,

And while I fall, I see other people

Falling with me.

The small voice in the back of my mind

Telling me to get out before it’s too late

Gets weaker the deeper I fall.

Until it’s barely a whisper

And finally melts into the colors.

Meanwhile, on the other side, I accidentally look at the time.

The seconds flash by revealing the hours lost;

The world I was in fades like a sleepless dream

And I’m back in the world where everything is real.

The author's comments:

This piece is inspired by my inability to focus on my work and always be distracted. Many teens also face the same problem, especially with the accessibility and availability of the internet. My poem embodies students' struggle when they are presented with the options to make good use of their time or to waste it on video games, social media, etc.

The modern day struggle is so vividly pictured. Well done!
