I will not forget

The smell of bread wafting from the kitchen

The gentle creaks of the stairs as we ran down

The chatter filling the air

I cannot forget

The fluttering of the brown, weathered pages

The tapping of the chalk, dancing across the black board

The laughter escaping on the wind through the door

I cannot forget

The cold hands of hers, roughly shaking me

The incessant pounding splintering the door

The screams and cries echoing throughout

I cannot forget

The frigid air, clutching me with its icy hand

The incomprehensible shouts ringing in the air

The emptiness stealing my hand from her grasp

I cannot forget

The bitter wind smothering me

The desperate eyes, searching for a part in the clouds

The last glimpse of a world left behind

I cannot forget

The quietness covering like a veil

The touch of every other body

The eternity passing by

I cannot forget

The screams for those too far

The aching feet dragging onward

The two paths diverged, being pushed and forced down one

I cannot forget

The soft touch of hair falling

The brushing of dirt from the stripes

The horrors seen within

I cannot forget

The hunger

The fear

The pain

I cannot forget

The blackness surrounding

The stench of fear

The pounding on the door

I cannot forget

The drop to my knees

The scent of death

The eternal darkness

I cannot forget

I will not forget.

The author's comments:

This piece is meant to capture the experience of an innocent child caught up in the Holocaust, torn away from their family and forced into an extermination camp. Although they are unable to tell their story, it will not be forgotten; we will remember it for them.

We will not forget.
