If you happen to glance up
On a sad, dreary day
You’ll see some big clouds
All lined with grey
Misery, raindrops
And all things between
Come from a place
That is seldom seen
It’s the old Sadness Factory
The place that lacked cheer
Once crawling with monsters and bad dreams
And also with fear
You ask, “Why was it made?
Why can’t we be happy?”
Well, it was Bill’s fault
Bill’s life was crappy
You see, from early on
Bill had a sad life
His goldfish had drowned
His puppy had mites
Bill’s mom did not love him
She never smiled or hugged
His dad was mean, too
And treated Bill like a bug
The other kids teased him
And made his life hard
He had old, broken toys
And a small, muddy yard
As he grew older
Bill got angry and sad
Others were happy
And never ever treated bad
So one day he took
All his anger to the sky
And built a small factory
To make people cry
When he saw others hurt
It made him feel glad
Now others would cry
Now they would feel bad
Bill added more rooms
Out of contempt and hate
“Now they’ll feel like me
They won’t catch a break!”
The factory constantly grew
As new rooms were added
Rooms to make people go blind
And beloved pets go rabid
Hallways and nooks
Were filled with nightmares and screams
The attic had creepy-crawlies
The basement had bees
Bill just couldn’t stand
To see others smile
So he made rooms that hurt people
And made others face trials
But Bill was not evil
He was merely confused
Why did others get to win
While he had to lose?
So he put all his effort
Into making bad days
Days that rained hate
And had no pretty sun rays
Bill was just jealous
He knew no one who cared
No one to talk with
No smiles to share
Then one day Wendy came
With both a smile and a laugh
“I’ve heard you cause trouble
I’ve come to stop that”
Wendy walked around the factory
Searching all to rooms
She added some kindness
And took out some gloom
Wendy was nice
And showed Bill to love
“Everyone hurts, Bill,
They don’t need a shove”
Slowly but surely
They bottled the tears
The bad dreams were gone
They swept away fears
Wendy was patient
Though it took a long time
Bill learned to be happy
Bill learned to be kind
All the things were packed
Into a closet so small
One tiny space
That could make sadness fall
Because Bill just couldn’t close
His lifetime work
“We’re still human
Sometimes we hurt”
So that one room was left
Way up in the clouds
It filled raindrops with sad things
That sometimes dripped down
So just remember
If you have a bad day
It was Bill’s fault
But he’s nicer today.
