We were safe in our walls

The Mongols were outside

Then we saw something fall

And our eyes went plate wide

The bodies were falling

No one was truly safe

The Black Death was calling

To that scared Caffa place

We heard a whoosh and thump

And that's right when we knew

The bodies were just dumped

And we all would be through

The bodies were falling

No one was truly safe

The Black Death was calling

To that scared Caffa place

The bodies kept flying

One by one, two by two

Our people kept dying

One by one said adieu

The bodies were falling

No one was truly safe

The Black Death was calling

To that scared Caffa place

Most of Caffa was dead

Europe was next in line

The Mongol cowards fled

Europe ignored the signs

The bodies were falling

No one was truly safe

The Black Death was calling

To that unaware place

The author's comments:

This ballad is about the Siege of Caffa, which is one of the first recorded instances of biological warfare and a hypothesized way that the Black Death reached Europe.
