Birds fly overhead bringing peace and harmony to all,

Their symbol is recognized worldwide, no matter how small.

Like me, birds travel in hopes of flying free,

Above the grounds, above the seas.

Singing their sweet song all throughout the day,

It is peace they convey.

Now, I am no bird and while I can not fly,

I too flourish in the sun, in mid July.

In the sun, I bask.

Like the birds, as if it's their task.

I know I have yet to be as free

As the birds that go tweet tweet.

And even if I can't become as free as the ones above,

I still have hope that I will, like the morning doves.

With such fearlessness and strength,

These creatures come to me at arm's length.

And when I observe with just my eye,

In their glory, I sigh.

Because even if I am not as free as them all along,

I can still sit back and enjoy their songs.

The author's comments:

My name is Melissa. As I would like to have an occupation in English, writing is very important to me. Ever since I can remember, writing has been my comfort blanket and when things get tough I like to portray this in my writing. It helps me express my emotions in meaningful ways. I hope others can find warmth within this poem, as it relates to the feeling of entrapment within your own self. Nostalgia can leave us feeling lonely and like our future isn't so bright, but through my writing, I like to give a sense of hope to my readers. I hope you enjoy it! Thank you for your time.
