Empty Promises
She looked into his eyes,
She saw the sadness.
She saw the hurt and betrayal
So she gave him her shoulder,
And herself.
She looked into his eyes.
The sadness still there, but a glimmer of happiness,
That was there only for her.
It was contagious, the happiness in his eyes.
He looked at her and saw the mischievous sparkle in her eye,
As she glanced at the ground and back up at him.
“Don’t even think about it,” he warned.
She laughed and stomped on the abandoned sauce packet on the sidewalk from Taco Bell,
And laughed even harder as it splattered all over his worn blue jeans.
He tried to keep a straight face, but fell in love with her laugh all over again,
He couldn’t help but laugh along with her and peck her cheek.
She looked into his eyes,
And she saw the sadness, back again,
So she gave him her shoulder,
Once again.
She didn’t ask why,
She was just what he needed,
And that was enough for her.
She looked into his eyes,
She saw the regret and the sorrow.
“It won’t happen again, baby, I promise,
She’s nothing compared to you.”
She tried to smile through her tears.
She looked into his eyes
Except they didn’t look the same.
They shined bright, but different.
They were beautiful, nonetheless,
But they wandered when she looked.
But he promised, right?
She searched the crowded hallways for his eyes.
She found them and smiled.
He gave her a half smile as she grabbed his hand.
“Not today baby, I just want to walk next to you.”
She kept her smile on her face as her heart sank to her stomach.
After all, it was probably just a bad day.
Or a bad week.
Month.
She looked into his eyes
She saw shame, but why?
“Baby, we’re not okay, you know that, right?”
She didn’t, but she nodded, lost for words.
“I need to talk to you about us.”
She looked into his eyes,
She saw the emptiness.
“I don’t love you anymore” he said
“What did I do? How can we fix this?”
“I’m not happy,” he said.
She looked for his eyes.
She saw them gleaming just the same,
But not for her.
She looked into the mirror at her own eyes,
Lifeless, tired, and drained.
She realized she’d given all of herself away
And was left with nothing but memories.
Memories of empty promises and the illusion of happiness,
And a hollow heart where the love used to be.
