Spoken Word Poetry

When you play a team in a sport, why do you play them?
When you compete in a spelling bee, why do you compete?
When you play a person in chess, why do you play?
Simple, to win.

There is no sugar coating it!
There is no other way to describe!
There is no alternative!
The scene that they play in is a competitive one.
Bring no less than your best, or so it should be.
For the trophies that were designated for the achievers are being distributed to everyone like candy.
The “Thanks for trying” and “You did great”

“Everyone’s a winner!” “Everyone’s a champion!”
Yet if everyone’s a winner, why compete?
If everyone’s wins that what does that make the winner?
What does that say to the little boy who practiced so much to get better a baseball?
What does that tell the little girl who studied and studied for the spelling bee?
What does that say to the kids who worked hard to win?
That their victory they worked so hard to achieve is equal to the kid who never practiced and never cared in the first place?

If the message that is being sent to kids is that just being there is enough to win, then why should they ever try?
Why should they train and practice for baseball when they get and award for just being there?
Why should they study when their rightful victory will be undermined and underwhelmed by everyone else’s “victory”?
Why should they try in the first place if they are already a winner?
Why should they try?
Why should they practice?
Why should they study?
Why should they try to better themselves?
Why try?

What message had been sent is that by not trying, you will be rewarded.
You can be as lazy as you want, you will still be awarded.
Because at the end of the day, why try?
After all, every one’s a winner.
