Mother and Child

Undescriptive the moment,
pensive the heart
fluttered in her breast,
watching and holding,
holding her breath and waiting.

Her mother’s heart aches
to reach and grasp him;
grasp his tiny, grimy hands,
dry his wet trailing tears,
and receive a slobbery kiss in turn.

Still she stands back and waits,
watching disappointment, frustration
on her beloved son’s face,
as he yet fails again and again
to rise to his clumsy little feet.

Finally he has had enough,
sitting down he pounds the dirt
with tiny fists and wails,
hushing and cooing she soothes his heart
and gently ever so gently,
helps him to his feet again.
