Night's Gift
Night hands Earth a cloak.
He tells her, “Get some rest.”
So she wraps herself up rightly,
And whispers, “You’re the best.”
He paints the sky with diamonds,
That spell out ‘I love you’.
He blows a gentle breeze,
And revives her flowers with dew.
His fingers play a song
In the leaves of every tree.
He strokes the nighttime creatures
As they all run free.
But the garish sun is rising;
His gifts begin to fade.
Earth will never see
The art for her he made.
She never sees the diamonds,
Or the message in their light.
But she sees her fresh, new flowers,
And smiles, knowing they’re from Night.
