The Rat
Dig faster!
I would give anything to be that rat
As my life is now fitting of one
Surrounded by filth and darkness
So much joy my wish would bring
To be too small for the noose that took my father
To be too quick for the bullet that took my mother
I would never need to remember the star
Nor would I know the hunger, shame, or pain
That has been in my life since the soldiers came
I hope that with all those Reichsmarks
The recipient bought a bigger heart
The rat will soon enter the dirt
As will I
But only one of us will see sunrise
