Ode to Steak
Oh steak,
Your chewy, smoky skin
Tantalizes my taste buds.
One bite might draw me into
Your hypnotic state of juices and fat.
I know what you must think of me-
How I gobble you up so easily
After the long journey of a cow
To the butcher, to the buzzing kitchen
And finally to my dinner plate.
But you don’t understand the mindless effect you have on me.
Just the sound of your name or
The crunch of your grilled rind
Transforms me like a dog looking for a squirrel.
I can’t help but to sniff out your seasoning
Or the varying juices you marinate in.
I know our relationship probably isn’t for the best
But the energy and indulgence you provide
Is impeccably first to none.
My dear steak,
If it is the truth you so desire,
I must confess it.
You are the love of my life.
I know you have been through a whirlwind
Of an adventure, but I am here to comfort you
As you comfort me.
The brown and black crust
That I cut to reveal your deep and fleshy heart
Will always leave me content and grateful that you are in my life.
