All That Pretty

When I was younger
I was called ‘fish face’
By my childhood bully
for not dressing like a girl

That wasn't the first incident
Of being bullied

I was never all that pretty
And I'm still not,
But I’m kinda funny.
But I was never all that pretty

I was never all that pretty
If not for my wits
Then I would
Not have survived
The harsh words
I was witty
But I was never all that pretty

I was never all that pretty
But I had my smarts
and my arts
Those were never
taken from me
I was smart
And I had art
But I was never all that pretty

I was never all that pretty
So my self-esteem

Got lower

and lower

As I grew
I didn't grow much
But I did grow
But I was never all that pretty

I was never all that pretty
Now I hide myself
with these Sweaters
In hopes that it will
act like a cocoon
And make me all that pretty
