Near Life
Today you can’t walk you must crawl
A close brush with he who is grim
But the bucket you kicked did not fall
Only circled around by the rim
Today just for you all time stops
The horror, the pain, and the fear
Quickly down to your feet your heart drops
Just like every warm droplet of tears
  The unpleasant tempest of shock
Blows hard through your gut and it burns
You listen for that ticking clock
Till the breath of life finally returns

This piece is inspired by the feelings of a "near-death experience". Although I have never experienced it myself, I imagine it would feel similar to this. I hope that this poem will convey an element of heartbreak and suspense to the reader.
