Nobody Knows Who Lit the Fireplace
In order to know who did it, it is important to hear all sides of the story.
In the house there was a butler killed, by the hot water from a kettle,
he was severely burned when he was found. He had been sitting in the chair
when he died, but that’s not where they found his body. The fireplace
in the living room with the chair, along with the bookshelf
are considered evidence. All living residents are going to be questioned about it.
The father says that his daughter is the one who must have done it.
He claims to have woken up at his usual time so that he could read one of the stories
that he kept on the shelf in the living room, when he got there the bookshelf
had a few books missing. Later, around the eighth hour, He had used the kettle
to make his morning tea using the stove, and not the fireplace,
before heading to work, which is when he says the butler must have been killed in the chair.
Mother says she has no idea who did it. She took a nap in bed, instead of the lumpy chair.
after doing laundry in the early morning, just before Father normally wakes, she carried it
back to the living room, where she had folded the clothes by the unlit fireplace
Afterwards, she had searched the shelves in her room for a story
to read that would help her to fall asleep. She could not find the kettle,
It wasn’t in the kitchen. She hadn’t paid much mind to the bookshelf.
Son thinks that one of the girls did it. He admits to having taken books from the bookshelf,
so he could read the stories from his fathers shelf, while sitting in his bedroom chair,
to avoid being caught, he did this is the wee hours of the morning. He didn’t use the kettle.
but it had been lying in its spot on the counter when he had seen it
that morning. It was noon when he had finally finished his story,
And when he went back down to replace it, there was a fire was glowing in the fireplace.
Sister believes that her father could’ve done it. She had curled up in front of the fireplace
with the family cat at around the eleventh hour, she had paid no mind to the bookshelf
because she was comfortable and did not feel like getting up to find a story
to read. While she was in the room, she nor nobody else sat in the chair
in the living room, so she was unsure as to whether or not it
could have been damp with water that had been poured from the tea kettle.
After the crime was discovered, and the butler's body identified, the kettle
was nowhere to be found, and the living room was completely uninhabited. The fireplace
was still filled with warm coals and it’s flames had long since died. It
had been hours since anyone had been in the living room. The bookshelf
was missing many books, some had even been knocked down. The chair
was empty and dampened, and everyone appeared to have some truth to their stories.
Father had used the kettle, and afterwards it was missing. Mother had many large gaps within her story.
Son admits to having knocked the books from the shelf, and Sister laid on the floor instead of in the chair.
But nobody admits to lighting the fireplace, so who did it?

I wrote this piece after learning what a sestina was. I thought to myself, what would be a good theme for a sestina? And this just came to me.
