Cerulean Iris
The mission down the street made of stone
wallowed in the western sun.
She was wearing a green sundress with sunglasses encircled about her eyes,
and he was in straight-fit blue jeans and a cotton white t-shirt covered in dust.
Above the lonely corner of Camino and Ortega the sky glistened so blue
without a single doubt that anything out of the ordinary could depart from their minds.
These two develop polaroid shots of particular memories in each of their minds.
Both stand still, poised, and silent as smooth as riverbed stones
mirroring each other’s faces until one’s lips curl up leaving no trace of a sorrow’s blue.
The rubber soles of their shoes scrape the sidewalk while their skin freckles from the sun
as together they move in synchronized time against the path’s windy dust.
They picture the stories that lay behind the irises of their eyes
that aren’t spoken in word, but in translation through the eye.
However, Georgia knows what’s on Frank’s mind
because she’s looked through the ‘63 Kodak instamatic camera lense veiled in a gray dust.
Still walking paced together, he slows at the sight of the headstones
and reaches out to a familiar one, but takes a step back into the sun.
It will hurt Frank to look back, so she leads him away from his tender past sketched in blue,
and away they walk with the brisk breeze towards a churned ocean blue.
Tears descend slowly from Frank's glass-like eyes,
for his brother who loved to surf the Pacific swell under the radiant sun
was swallowed by a maverick wave on a hot July day and his mind
left his body, as his body left his mind with his limp feet and hands touching the sea stones.
He removes his shoes to feel the powdery sand blanket over his feet like a dust
blowing in the wind through his hair and the crevices of his toes all from a dry dust.
A numbness to his face and torso disperses on his skin turning a pale blue
as he wades into the deep, crossing over cold shapeless shells and stones,
and finds his balance against the current by looking into the ocean’s eyes.
Love, hope, renewal encompass his thoughts from his clouded mind
as he looks up and finds her standing on the shoreline warming in the sun.
She expresses a freedom as the hem of her dress sways in the sun
trying to get her soul free and realize the notion of stardust
is found within her tranquil spirit and his limpid mind.
He carries himself out of the water, slowly, towards her under the sky blue
to meet each other’s gaze with their earnest, profound eyes
through which they together hold onto memories in the still light engraved in stone.
He puts on his dusty shirt and they turn away from the big blue.
They pass the headstones of the many mind’s who have gone up and away.
They say goodbye with their eyes as the sun begins to fade.
