A Day At The Beach
The warm sand against your feet is scorching to the touch,
A feeling that without you come to miss so much.
The strong ocean breezes constantly blow
The feeling of the frigid air is an abrupt hello.
Walking up and down the beach goes the ice cream man
Pushing his heavy cart through the piles of grainy sand.
Circling above your head the white birds fly
Seeking out your food, on them you must keep an eye.
The stench of the salty air hits you like a wall,
Your humid, sticky surroundings are what you smell above all.
Up and down the shore kids screaming in terror and joy,
The terrible water giant affects every girl and boy.
Upon their mighty thrones the life guards sit
Protecting us all, from our momentary lack of wit.
Scattered across the beach people absorb the sun’s rays
Hoping for the perfect tan that will last for many days.
The overpowering aroma of sunscreen is all around,
Defending us from the sun, for if we got burnt we’d surely have a frown.
A sea of colorful umbrellas crash upon the shore
Their bright colors liven up the landscape and you wish that there were more.
The small homey stores a-line the adjacent streets
Friendly people are all about, one’s you’d surely like to meet.
Shaved ice stands are dispersed on every street corner,
Refreshing, they prevent your body from getting any warmer.
Long brown planks of wood stretch to make a boardwalk,
The overpriced games, store, and food are where the people tend to flock.
Many free hours allow for plenty of time to read,
Catching up with an intriguing book is relaxing, on this we must agree.
Hunting for seashells always passes the time
Over the mountainous piles of sand we have to climb.
The tiny specks of sand are everywhere
For weeks after you find it in your car and in your hair.
Up in the sky planes with ads glide
Giving you their info, they’d like to be your guide.
For days sitting on the shore you must have the perfect bathing suit,
The superb color and fit will make you look super cute.
You spend hours building a sand kingdom upon which you rule,
Until a group of kids kick it over thinking they are cool.
Salt water taffy, you can not leave without,
And if you do not bring some for your family they will surely shout.
The striped towels on the beach lay in perfect rows,
This marvelous image makes for stunning photos.
After a long day in the sun you will turn a bright red,
You feel your burning skin when lying in your bed.
On the ocean small and big boats sail
They jaunt across the sea, avoiding collision with a whale.
Brightly colored kites dance above our heads
Soar, and glide around the sky, but do not let go of the threads.
Loose lacy sandals upon your feet expose your toes,
But be careful for they must match your clothes.
Green slimy seaweed is scattered in the sea
The gooey plant sticks onto your knee.
The red, yellow, blue beach balls bounce everywhere,
The game is fun and simple, there is one rule don’t hit mom sitting in her chair.
A group of boys throw a frisbee back and forth,
Every once in awhile the wind will carry the plastic disk off to the north.
During the summer the beach is a marvelous place,
But the different setting from home might be hard to embrace.
Great memories are made from family fun,
The beach is an experience for anyone.

I was inspired by my childhood and the time I spent at the beach with my family. I based the poem on my own experiences and memories.
