We don’t always recognize the link between opinions and sight
But there’s a reason why are people are brutally honest in the dead of night.
When the lights go out, we switch our mind...
Our feelings seep through from places they’ve been confined.
Trickles of thought surge through in slow,
When there’s no beams to capture, the truth is easy to let go
But what is truth? And what’s a lie?
Who’s real intentions become apparent absent their disguise?
With so many in shadows, it should be easy to hide,
But the opposite occurs when we turn off the light.
If we viewed the world through eyes that couldn’t see,
Maybe we could sculpt ourselves back to how we should be.
If politics could spread from who all agreed,
We wouldn’t be stuck in debt, neck-deep.
Maybe Supremacy wouldn’t be determined off the color of your skin,
But Instead leaders would be recognized for what they feel within
If our focus shifted away from what we could glance to
Maybe we could stop being all talk and start to do.
If appearance didn’t determine the way you grow,
Would people care enough to learn more than what they know?
If It isn’t about the right look or sway,
are judgments based purely off of what you decide to say?
If you must attain your motivation purely off of sound
Who’s role models remain heavenly and who’s are hell-bound?
Do you stay with people you’ve known forever,
Or do even the strongest relationships begin to sever?
When you have no appearance, are you still the same
Or does lack of a face make your personality mundane?
Could we step away from the subconscious shrine of the mirror,
Or are we too inherently trapped by the way we appear?
Beautiful people aren’t excluded from the problems they create,
So why are we convinced if we turn the other way we’re exempt from fate?
If the answer isn’t with what we can change outside,
Maybe we should try to see the world blind.

The author's comments:

I wrote this peice after a particulary long conversation I sat through discussing the racism in our country. They talked for quite a while, and as it was the debate team, everyone was involved and emotional over the issue. It was interesting to see everyone's opinions and insight on the matter and I was intrigued by some of the things that were said. I kept thinking about these things and linking them to other kinds of oppression and got to thinking that the majority of the problems we create in modern-day society are caused by the perceptions we have of the world. My personal opinion is shown in the poem.
