You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should've behaved better. -Anne Lamott, from Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life.

Disruptions blast the news, the news cast claiming to know the truth
Of a shooter shooting families, the elderly, the middle youth
Cruising down the street to meet the target for his dance
A cabbie keeping tally of his rallying romance
A samba changing genres to a strike down at a word
Word of mouth is faster than the master if the bullets all you've heard
Lock the doors, get off the streets, tell everyone you see
That a coward lurks on Howard, working up towards you and me
The numbers rise, don't close your eyes to the tragedy at hand
Because the cities fear is pretty clear, in the arms of a single man
God bless the six in heaven, and the two, the violence never ending
Our city plastered next to each news caster, prayers and thoughts they send us
But our city is more than the decisions and the provisions of a sickened man
We are light, we are knowledge, we're a voice from the college offering our hands
To stand behind the victims, to show the world we won't be stricken with fear
Our city is ours, we take it back, and if the only words you hear
Are that our every sadness is with those who have passed far too early in their years
Our city is more than a tallying score of the violence in our atmosphere
February twentieth, we may bow our heads to the families who have been wronged
But our love grows stronger, our bond grows longer, we are Kalamazoo strong
