Your first love
Is someone you’ll never forget.
Something that you never saw coming.
But the way you felt around him
Was different than anything you’ve ever felt before.
But who would have ever guessed that your first love
Is the reason you never want to love again.
The reason that you sit in your room alone at night
Asking yourself how could you care for someone so much
And get nothing in return.
You were always there for him.
Crossing oceans for someone who has to think twice about jumping a puddle for you.
It wasn’t fair.

Love is supposed to make you happy.
Getting butterflies when you think of that special person.
But instead it was a constant feeling of your heart dropping into your stomach.
How could someone speak so many words
And mean none of them at all when to you,
It meant everything.
He didn’t love you.
So many nights you sat in silence.
Wondering how you could give your all and it not be enough.
But then you took a step back to reevaluate things.
Instead of hating him, you thanked him,
For all that he taught you.
Showing you that you are not to fight for love.
If it’s true, it will come easily.
But most importantly, he taught you
There is no one that can love you better than yourself.
You know that you deserve better.
You deserve to be happy.
And there is someone out there that will love you
Better than he ever could.
If he doesn’t exist, you won’t cry.
Because you love yourself.
No feeling can compare to what you feel
When you realize your self-worth.
So you’re right.
Your first love is someone you never forget.
They teach you that the only love you need
Is from yourself.
And that’s something you’ll never forget.

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem based off of a previous relationship that I was in. Being a teenager, I fell in love with someone who didn't love and appreciate me. This relationship taught me to love myself first, and the right person will come along. From publishing this piece, I hope that other teenagers my age will learn the same lesson.
