I say, without hesitation,
that I am a part of a new generation
A generation challenged with growing up in despair
Towards the world order; the system that’s always been there
Oh destiny, I find it kind of funny,
that we who plea to be free from thee,
repeatedly find ourselves far deeper within your grasp
than we ever intended to be.
In this day and age,
Paths in life has been predetermined far before conception.
Idealistic dreams form dark clouds that refuse to burst,
but parents put their children underneath a giant umbrella,
just in case the rain starts to fall.
My son will grow up to live a successful life.
But their definition is really what serves to be questioned.
Who determines the success of an individual
living in their own skin?
Is it the moth or the butterfly who is truly beautiful?
The moth surely flutters more freely through the air.
I am a part of a new generation
in which individuality is obliterated by one’s own chagrin
We live in a world defined by achievement
and greed,
greed that carries people to want things that they don’t need
Maybe that’s all because of natural selection
We desire to outmatch our neighbors
and assert our dominance
We are in a never ending boxing match
except, without a winner
But isn’t the concept of achievement just a limitation?
Shouldn’t the power of human potential be at least slightly guided by imagination?
We are goldfish, trapped within our little glass fishbowls,
accepting only the things that we are given,
we press our faces against the glass
just to see the vast horizons of the outside world,
and dream of being free from the prison known as uniformity.
This is simply an impossibility,
as I am a part of a generation ruled by conformity.
I am a part of a new generation
A generation that is  filled to the brim with ambition
We find ourselves living our lives lacking relaxation
because we are not allowed to explore our fascinations.
There’s something to be said about productivity
it is actually what allows us to express our creativity
But we find ourselves turning into sharks
Sharks that can’t stop swimming,
swimming through our own busy, dull world,
never having the freedom to be still, or to enjoy the moment.
I am a part of a new generation
A generation that prays to be one day released from its shackles
And all of the expectations that we will have to tackle
Will just dissipate into the wind
The problem is,
whenever we awaken from the nightmare,
and we think we have finally reached an end,
the dream automatically begins again.
So we wait,
and we will continue to wait,
waiting until we finally reach the last bit of food
that was stacked up on our plate.
And when we take that last bite,
we will know that times have changed.
