If there were no mirrors would you still be you-My mom

Dear Mrs. President

There was a precious yet curious little girl,
She was quite stylish with her hair all in curls.

She saw bad things happening on the TV,
And wondered just how this could be?

Her mom says people are good in their heart.
But she couldn’t see it and she was pretty smart.

What at first made her so agitated,
Was getting ready for school and being frustrated.

The school says girls must be properly dressed.
Girls must try always to look their best.

Cover your shoulders, your knees, and your toes.
Always wear dresses and ribbons and bows.

Don’t gain weight or get even a little bit fat,
For everyone knows that boys won’t like that.

But the Boys don’t have to adhere to these rules.
Some walk around school looking like ghouls.

Their pants are almost always sagging,
Yet the teachers, to them, you never hear nagging.

To her mom she asked: Why are the standards different for me?
Isn’t respect a two way street?

On TV the idea of smart girls is shattered,
Because for girls what they look like is all that matters.

And here is another thing she said to her mother,
Why is it bad for my sisters but not brothers

To express how they feel and shed a tear in their eye?
She said I really want to see more sensitive guys.

Then on about she went to tell other poems
About sickness and starvation and people with no homes.

Why is it okay for those who have so much
To use the rest of the world like a personal crutch?

Why is it ok that some kids can’t afford books
While others use lap tops, I Pads, and Nooks?

Mom, when we sit down at the table
We can eat as much as we are able.

Yet, kids who are in other places
Look starved and sad with flies on their faces.

The rich people eat enough for themselves and their kin
While other dig their food out of a trash bin.

And what’s the deal with different races?
No matter your races, we all have different faces.

Why is a dark face less valued than a light?
Why do the people hate black and not white?

Seems kind of stupid to hate people for their color,
Why not just always be kind to one another?

So her mother who was quite amused,
At her daughter who was quite confused,

Said, you need to ask someone who deals with these problems each day.
Who do you think would have something to say?

She thought “hum” who is in charge of making the world better?
So she sat right down and wrote out a letter.

Dear Mrs. President, she started to say.
Can’t we do better than we are doing today?

Can’t we love each other like religions say we should?
Or are they all too busy fighting to see what they could

do to make the world more harmonious and loving?
But instead they are all fighting, pushing, and shoving.

To be the only ones who are right,
They will refuse to give up their individual fights.

I would like a world where everyone just gets along,
Even if we are not all singing to the same song.

So even if there is a difference in the verses that we sing,
Harmony and love would be the theme that rings.

It would it be nice for my generation
To know we have some consideration.

That the people who are supposed to be grown up
Will not one day forget what’s right and get us all blown up.

Because they would have learned from their history
That no one wins in war, to that there is no mystery.

Sending my brothers and sisters to fight to the death,
Fighting till they take their last breath,

For a cause that only those with power understand.
With hopes that they can one day hold a medal in their hand.

Makes little sense to me.
Without war, the world is a better place to be.

How about let’s fight wars with words?
Like I understand, I am listening, I have heard.

Don’t you think it would be nice
If about our environment people would think twice?

Wouldn’t it be good if the trees that I play on
Will continue to be there for my daughter and son?

Won’t it be nice for the air that they breathe
Not be filled with pollution and disease?

Why is there so much violence on the TV?
Why are all the videos so full of sleaze?

So many questions I have to ask you,
So many things that make me feel blue,

So I am writing you this letter Mrs. President
Because I am trying to find good and it’s just not evident.

I need to know how I can make things better,
So I thought you could kindly answer my letter.

The President she smiled to receive this note,
And then she sat down and a letter she wrote.

Back to the girl with the pretty hair,
She explained how nice it was to know she cared.

Dear Pretty Girl with the curly hair,
All of your questions are more than fair.

I too wonder about all this stuff,
It’s the reason I am in this office.

The President being faced with the same mystery
Decided the best way to answer was with History.

Do you remember a person in history named Rosa Parks?
She sat in the seats marked “not for those with skin that is dark”.

She refused to let people tell her she was wrong,
Her actions were singing a harmonious song,

A song about people being equal no matter their skin tones.
Sing out, sing loud in public, in private, and on phones,

We are all equal even if we don’t look the same.
Her actions called out the haters and put them to shame.

She explained about those who served those in need.
Mother Teresa worked her whole life to feed.

She did not sit by, she thought it absurd,
The questions about what was wrong with the world.

She gave of her life to serve those around her,
And did her part to kill the starvation monster.

If you are worried about the rights of girls and women,
Look at the works of the honored Hillary Clinton.

She, too ,hated the ways women were treated,
So she ran for president even though she was defeated.

She made a statement heard far and wide
About what was acceptable and female pride.

When she was running people would make fun
Of the clothes she wore, she didn’t care she would run

For the highest office in the land.
From there she could make a stand.

For just sitting and watching and complaining a lot,
Would not change the things she was taught.

From George Washington to President Barack Obama
The President’s letter was creating a Drama.

The Drama of the History of the USA
Full of People we study about today.

Who didn’t just accept the way things were
But went out and found their own cure.

Don’t you see, little girl ,what I am trying to say?
The world can’t be better for anyone today

Unless we look in the mirror and see where we start
And the answer lies in each person’s heart.

What matters to you, what makes you care?
Go make the world better there.

If you want the world in which you live
To be better, then you have to give

A bit of yourself to all of these things,
That is when you heart starts to sing.

What makes the world better for everyone you see
Is to know what’s better is not just better for “me”.

It’s to know that what makes things better is our ability to know
That a better world follows those whose actions this shows.

You see those in history who have done what is right,
Have often caused haters to scream and to fight.

Doing what makes things right for all
Means the person taking a stand may have to take a fall.

So Pretty little girl with the curly blond hair,
Or to anyone else who may be out there.

To know what makes the world better,
Don’t just sit down and write a letter.

Stand up, make a stand, believe in something
For that is when in harmony the world will sing.

It’s the choices you make every day,
It’s the way you act and the words that you say

That make the history of the generation to come.
So will you be the one

About whom future children will study
From the books stuffed in the cubby?

Or will you think only of yourself
And put others interests on the shelf?

The message about how to make the world better
Ends with this thought that started with your letter.

The author's comments:

I am 13.  I wrote this poem in honor of my mom who always taught us that we must always do what is right even when we know what is "right" is not always right for ourselves.  She said our ability to see the world as "us" and not just "me" is what makes the world a better place.  As I have grown I have learned how unique my mom is and wished more people thought like her. My poem was written with Hillary Clinton in mind.  She is my mom's idol.  We believe she would truly make a wonderful president.  The poem is long because the subjects it covers are important and can't be tackled in a short poem. To do so would be to ignore the issues in the world that we all need to think about.  I hope you like my poem. As I enter 8th grade this year I hope to write more poems about how people can each make the world better around them if they just think beyond themselves.
