Bright Green Eyes
In the bar below my bedroom, while rolling thunder pierced the night
I drank many a pint of ale wond’ring what I had done right
When a man who wore a top hat sat to tell me ‘bout his black cat
His black cat that had bright green eyes, eyes even witches would despise.
“Back when I was but a small boy, stood a house that rang with laughter
On a farm all on their own: a father, mother, son, and daughter
Some were young and some others old, but all happy as kings with gold
When one night a cat came calling, calling for some warm milk and love.
“The daughter happily humming, never knowing of her plight
Only blinked at lamps extinguished, barely shiv’ring in calm moonlight
She looked up into the mirror, and no one would ever hear her
Shriek in sudden desperate fear, fear of those bright green eyes in here.
“Some days later as the mother perceived some slight disturbance near
In the bathtub all on her own, she wept and mourned her darling dear
Then she slid beneath the water, and before her terror slaughter
Chances to glance up one last time, in time to see those bright green eyes.
“Outside in the lovely garden, chopping wood up for the fire
Father swung his axe with fierce rage, for his world had grown so dire
He wished for an end to his life, should he fail to avenge his wife
Never even saw them coming, those bright green eyes that came for him.
“The son alone with broken heart, set out to flee such cursed place
In winter snowstorm left his home, hoping that death would not give chase
For warmth buried himself in snow, unaware of what we now know
That they will come they always do, those bright green eyes devour you.
“We ne’er went near that dreadful house, haunted by death and ghosts and wights
Think what you will but this is true: on a day when the sun shone bright
Once some men came and discovered an old skeleton in the bath
They claimed the fear left them in peace, a peace that soon was permanent.”
I left the bar and fled upstairs, to hide my many raised neck hairs
No rationalizing can change the fear of black cats I must bear
To this day I still do not know if this story was just for show
But no matter what we may do, green eyes are now with me and you.
