Cigarette Smoke
Ruby red lips and a cigarette
Cold rain and hot ashes
Tucked in the shelter of your arms
While you rest your chin on my shoulder.
You tell me I’m going to be okay,
But what about you?
Are you going to be okay
When the monsters of your past
Devour you whole?
Are you going to be fine
When the doubts of your mind
Carve into your skin?
Baby, you kiss me with the taste of smoke on your lips
And blood on your wrists
And demons in your mind.
You tell me not to worry about you
Everything will be okay.
You’ll save me from myself
But darling, you need me to save you
Before you dissipate like cigarette smoke
And leave me with a burn in my lungs.
