Decayed leather boots
On small fragile feet
Stretched worn sleeves
On slender arms
Splattered grime
On a delicate hem
Shabby apron tied
On an starched dress
Frayed wispy hair
On a regal head
Serious expression
On an angel’s face
Pallor seized the
Radiant cheeks
Solemnity seized the
Simple gaiety
Misfortune seized the
Beautiful Angel

I was given a free verse ekphrastic poetry assignment in my Creative Writing class. We had a slide of images to chose from and I immediately fell in love with an old image of a little girl working in what appears to be a mine. I became very attached to this picture and wrote a poem describing her as a "beautiful angel".
