The Kiss of Death

She stays up late
Waiting anxiously
She’s forgotten the time

Each breath he takes is painful
The nurse looks at her, disdainful
Both wait for the next rush of air
A painful sight she cannot bear

Several weeks have already passed
Which forced breath would be his last?
Several weeks have already gone by
Staying up, with each breath he’d try
To say the words, he’s tried for months
To say the words, he couldn’t utter once

One deep breath
“I love you”
His kiss of death
“I’ll miss you”

Several years have gone by
And every night she’d cry
She has made herself ill
Years of waiting can kill

With every tear, every night
Of him, she thought
Around her finger, bound tight
The ring, he bought

Each breath she takes stings
As she cries over his things
Several years have already passed
Which forced breath would be her last?
Several years have already gone by
Staying up, with each breath she’d try
To say the words, she’s tried through the years
To say the words she’d utter through the tears

One last breath
“I loved you”
Her kiss of death
“I missed you”
