“See you there!” I exclaim to my friend Luke
and hop in my small ultramarine Hyundai.
‘Thud thud thud screech bdddd’ my engine purrs.
Out of the school lot I go
off to a local pizzeria.
With my windows down,
the crisp spring breeze gives me goosebumps.
The sky slowly succumbs to a somber gray.
Halfway there.
A stoplight turns a sour red.
I glance at my phone in the passenger seat.
“Missed call from Luke.”
I press call and put the golden rectangle to my ear.
The light smiles green as he answers,
“Hey.”
“What’s up?” I ask lightly as my car trods
along Main Street.
“I have something to tell you…”
His lips linger on the last few words.
My brows furrow.
“What is it?”
“I’m... so sorry.”
I suddenly feel unprepared,
frightened-
like a child alone in the dark.
He unravels his mystery
through a set of short words.
My jaw drops,
my pulse quickens,
my grip tightens,
my hair stands on end,
and the clouds begin to weep
as if the sun would never shine again.
